“KidsOut are a national charity based in Leighton Buzzard, dedicated to providing fun and positive experiences for disadvantaged children throughout the UK. With a range of services, we focus mainly on children living in refuge as a result of having fled domestic abuse, providing Toy Boxes to every child relocated from refuge, and Fun Days for children in refuge, and children with other disadvantages, in order to provide a happy memory to look back on and something to look forward to, when it is needed most.”
WHAT WE DO
National Rotary KidsOut Day
The first National Rotary KidsOut Day took place in 1990 and since then it has turned into the biggest single outing for disadvantaged children in the UK. With more than 29,000 children participating in 2016, the National Day Out is run nationally in conjunction with Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) and is always on the second Wednesday in June.
Whether they live with critical health issues, in refuge or with a disability, children across the country are taken on a fun day out to the zoo, a theme park or even the seaside, often for the first time in their lives.
Launched in 2012, Fun Days takes disadvantaged children across the UK on a fun day out and helps them remember what it is like to just be children. Whether a trip to the theatre or a day at a theme park, Fun Days gives them something to look forward to and happy memories they can look back on.
Started in 2008, Toy Box delivers a box of brand new toys and games to children who have been rehoused due to domestic violence.
Each Toy Box is both age and gender appropriate, filled with a family game, jigsaw puzzle, craft activity, action figure/doll, books and a cuddly toy. Receiving the Toy Box can help children regain a sense of normality, make the world seem a little kinder, and give them a reason to invite other children over to play.
Begun in 2007, Phyzzpod uses multi-sensory environments to help young children learn and explore creatively. Particularly benefitting children with learning and physical disabilities, each Phyzzpod is a semi-portable sensory learning room that includes coloured lighting, bubble tubes, effects projectors, sound and video projection. By controlling these elements, children engage multiple senses and have more fun learning.
World Stories is a growing collection of traditional and original stories from around the world representing the 21 most commonly spoken languages by children in the UK. Currently one in seven UK children speaks a language other than English as their first language, often struggling to learn in an unfamiliar language and environment. World Stories is an online resource that helps children improve their literacy and keep up in the classroom. With more than 100 stories in written and audio format, World Stories opens the world to children.
